The HPV Family in Bulldozers — Same Pump, Far Harder Life
The same Komatsu HPV95, HPV145, and HPV160 series that power excavators also drive the hydraulic systems of Komatsu D65, D85, and D155 bulldozers. But the operating conditions couldn't be more different — and understanding this difference explains why bulldozer pumps wear faster and why the refurbishment must account for it.
In an excavator, the HPV pump cycles — dig, swing, lift, pause. Natural rest periods occur throughout the work cycle. In a bulldozer pushing overburden or cutting a grade, the pump runs at near-maximum displacement continuously for extended periods, with the blade constantly loaded. This sustained high-displacement operation at full pressure means the bulldozer HPV's internal clearances open up faster than in the same pump doing excavator work. Slipper pad wear on the pistons and barrel kidney erosion are accelerated by the continuous load profile.
PumpGrid's refurbished Komatsu bulldozer pumps account for this — we measure clearances to bulldozer-application standards (tighter criteria than for an equivalent-wear excavator pump) and extend the pressure hold test duration to verify performance under sustained-load conditions.
Natural rest periods during swing and repositioning allow oil to cool and pressure to relax. Average effective loading: ~55-65% of max displacement.
Long sustained push phases keep the pump at maximum displacement and pressure with minimal relief. Average effective loading: ~75-85% of max displacement.
This is why a Komatsu bulldozer HPV pump may need refurbishment at 4,000-5,000 hours while the same HPV in an excavator may last 6,000-8,000 hours under similar maintenance conditions. It's not a defect — it's the application.

Bulldozer-application HPV pumps are held at rated pressure for 20 minutes (vs 5 minutes for standard industrial applications) to replicate the sustained load profile of continuous pushing work. Any seal degradation or internal bypass that would not show on a short test becomes apparent in this extended hold.
Because bulldozer HPVs wear faster than excavator HPVs, we apply tighter acceptance criteria for internal clearances in pumps designated for bulldozer re-application — replacing components that would pass for excavator use but are closer to the limit for sustained high-load bulldozer work.
Your written test report includes both peak pressure (static test) and sustained pressure duration (20-minute hold) — two data points that together confirm bulldozer-appropriate performance. This documentation is particularly useful for site managers and project engineers.
All Komatsu bulldozer pumps carry a minimum 3-month warranty. Urgency dispatch available for mine-site and project-deadline situations — WhatsApp us with URGENT and your machine model.
Act on these early — delayed replacement risks secondary damage to cylinders, motors, and valves.
